Matthias Schardt

Matthias Schardt studied fine art and painting at the Art Academy Düsseldorf under professor Konrad Klapheck. After graduation he focussed on painting for a few years. Realistic landscapes in oil turned into more and more abstract paintings. He has been working as an illustrator since 2007. As a visiting lecturer he regularly gives creative workshops: „I learn at least as much as my students!“

Matthias lives in Wuppertal with his wife and daughter. – „A very underrated, exciting city. As ugly as it is beautiful. It’s a lot of fun to embark on a drawing expedition in this town. Often I’m just a few feet in and get stuck on some peculiarity.“ – His personal works are often influenced by what he finds along the way.

He has two work tables in his studio: a small one for his digital works, and one almost double that size for his analogue creations. Matthias always keeps an orange pencil case by his side – a gift from his wife.

Matthias Schardt has a big repertoire of analogue techniques: From pen and ink to watercolour, gouache and spatula work. Besides traditional paper, primed wooden boards serve as a basis for drawing. Some of his works are later edited on the computer. For some time Matthias has been creating digital illustrations and animations. – “Drawings are living things in themselves. But when they start to move, it gets really fascinating!”

Matthias is also an urban sketcher and has a special bond with city drawings, which he loves to create. He is also very interested in portraiture and often gets commissioned for portrait illustrations.

The illustrator is very proud of a project for Hager: a live drawing event at the Light and Building trade show in Frankfurt. For nine days he drew 150 portraits of attending visitors onto the wall with brush and ink. – „That was a huge challenge and quite exhausting, but I had a lot of fun. In the end, everyone was happy!“
