Oriana Fenwick

Oriana Fenwick was born in Germany but spent her childhood in faraway Zimbabwe. She returned to Germany with her mother when she was 14 and has been living in Frankfurt ever since. She studied at the University of Art and Design Offenbach, amongst others under Eike König.

Oriana’s most important tool is her pencil sharpener, as she almost exclusively works with lead and colour pencils. Her illustrations are highly realistic, sometimes with a surreal twist. She has developed a unique technique that gives her exceptional compositions a high recognition value.

Drawn from photographs, her analogue illustrations are only slightly edited and tweaked in Photoshop. Oriana Fenwick creates life-like drawings, characterized by a high degree of accuracy, with a great love for detail. – “I’m fascinated by every crease, I would love to be able to draw every pore. I enjoy putting myself in somebody’s position and capturing their character in my drawing!“ – Oriana created colour pencil portraits for Wallpaper Magazine and illustrated pencil portraits of various footballers for 11 Freunde magazine.

„Besides characterful faces I am interested in unexpected organic shapes from daily life. Their simplicity carries a certain beauty that is often overlooked.“ – The illustrator highlights the particular qualities of one object by combining it with others in extraordinary collages. A great example is Oriana Fenwick’s project for the publisher Gestalten, who commissioned her to illustrate a whole book about the history of the pencil. Recently Oriana created photorealistic works for the food column of newspaper Die Zeit.

What Oriana wants to achieve in her illustrations is this: To capture reality as she sees it, and to create a „wow“-effect for the viewer with her unique drawing style.
