Anne-Marie Pappas

Hamburg-based illustrator Anne-Marie Pappas was born in Lausanne and grew up in Switzerland and Greece. She studied Graphic Design at ECAL, and after her diploma in 2009 worked for various advertising agencies in Zurich and later in Hamburg as an art director. These days she works as an illustrator and graphic designer for editorials, advertising and the music industry.

Her parents loved to draw and Anne-Marie has inherited their passion. The first time she thought she could become a professional illustrator was when she drew and published her own comic book „La Bonne Bête“ at the age of nineteen.

Anne-Marie was always surrounded by many languages. She grew up bilingual with French and German, and later Greek as well. But there is no language that makes her express herself like illustration – it is a universal language that everyone understands.

She is always on the lookout for new ideas for her images and gets inspired by magazines, books, photographs, films, Instagram and what is happening on the streets. Her Wacom tablet and her Edding pens are her most important tools. She sketches her ideas out on paper or directly at the computer and then turn them into vector graphics.

Faces behind sunglasses are her favorite thing to draw. Anne-Marie loves minimalism, colorful with dark and humorous highlights. A large part of her portfolio consists of record covers for various music labels. Here she has creative freedom and music as an abstract subject gives her a lot of room to play. Anne-Marie loves to work conceptional and is happiest in projects where she is part of the process early on.

Aesthetics are very important to Anne-Marie – she enjoys making things beautiful and would love to work on murals and objects to turn her two-dimensional work into 3-D.
