Jojo Ensslin

Jojo Ensslin studied visual communication at the University of Applies Sciences Düsseldorf. During his studies he and his friends founded the off-space „Galerie Revolver” for contemporary art and illustration. Jojo still lives in Düsseldorf with his family and works as a freelance illustrator and animation artist. In addition he teaches animation, film and sound at Peter Behrens School of Arts.

Several times a year the passionate surfer takes his mobile office to the sea in search of the perfect wave – and the solitude of surfing inspires a lot of new ideas.

His head and hands are the most important tools for the illustrator: „The other bodyparts are probably important, too – without my legs I would fall off the chair!“ – His understanding of colour and form brings out the profound in his drawings. His illustration style is characterized by a benevolent view of human beings and their flawed characters. – „My illustrations are simplified and reduced, but still filled with many details. Slick and exact, but rough and tactile at the same time.“

Besides many character designs, his portfolio shows his huge surfer heart. Since Jojo Ensslin has taken a special shine to woodblock printing, another project developed: he designs wooden surfboards.

Jojo also likes to animate his works as vector or pixel files. – “From my sketches I create the illustration with many layers, hundreds of vector planes and thousands of anchor points. Then I manually add shading, gradients and structure to the colour surfaces.”

A project close to the family man’s heart was a friendship book for kids with dinosaurs: Many colourful pages to be filled with stories, dreams and lists of favourite animals and funniest games.

In future, Jojo Ensslin would love to illustrate more children’s books. – „A cartoon series or computer game would also be brilliant!”
