Annette Jacobs studied at the College of Visual Arts in Saint Paul (USA) and at HAWK in Hildesheim. She then moved to Düsseldorf to work for various design agencies. Since 2013 she has her own studio as a graphic designer and illustrator and develops visual concepts for companies and institutions. In addition she taught the basics of design at Münster School of Design and FH Aachen.
Annette loves to turn things abstract, to remove them from form, colour and dimension. – “You can easily make new connections and create whole new worlds which might not exist in reality but can still be understood by the viewer.“ – First and foremost she likes to evoke emotions and tell memorable stories that make people smile.
The interplay between head, hand and heart is important for Annette Jacobs to transfer her fantasy into actual images. Her unique illustration style is characterized by a special mix of traditional craft and modern technology. Annette loves working with her hands and scissors, she is fascinated by paper and its versatility. She brought an elaborately designed pop-up book to life with over 1000 individual images, then animated her illustrations by hand in stop motion. This project was honored at the German Design Award 2018 as a winner in the category “Excellent Communications Design Online Publications”.
The ideas for her self-initiated work „Circus“ had been brewing in Annette’s head for a while. The series containing 6 layered papercut works got a lot of positive attention and went on to be published and exhibited – and made into an especially lovely screenprinted edition.
Her exceptional ideas and concepts grow from experimenting with tactility. – „Working analogue in our fast-paced, digitized world has a special, authentic touch.“ – But besides creating her images by hand, the subsequent digital processing also plays an important role in her work.
Regardless of big names, Annette Jacobs is interested in working with two types of clients: The innovators, who make the world a little bit better through their work – and the brave, who dare to strike out in new directions and have faith in Annette’s creativity.
