Sylwia Kubus

Sylwia Kubus discovered drawing and painting relatively late – but when she got started it felt like love at first sight! Studies at Lodz Film School and Film Academy Baden Wuerttemberg followed, where she first came into contact with moving images. Sylwia loves creating self-contained worlds that come to life through animation.

Fine art, architecture, film, photography, daily life and her travels are Sylwia’s sources of inspiration.

She cobines analogue and digital techniques in her work. Sylwia sketches out her ideas with pencil on paper or digitally on her favourite tool, the Wacom tablet. Then she refines her drawings in Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and After Effects. – „Because I often work with moving images, in the next step I create a storyboard and animatics.“ – Sylwia Kubus describes her illustration style as graphic, striking and with a reduced use of colour. She uses many lines and shapes and combines them for a high-contrast effect. To expand her technical palette and to be able to intergrate 2-D as well as 3-D elements into her moving images in future, Sylwia wants to improve her Cinema 4D skills.

The motion designer has created various animations for WDR TV series Quarks & Co. She loves the challenge of depicting complex content in a short film that’s easy to understand. Luckily, WDR gave the artist a lot of freedom to bring her own ideas and style to the pieces.

Sylwia Kubus is especially proud of her work for the movie „Conni & Co“ (2016): „They commissioned me to create the animated credits. I designed a 5-minute animated series of illustrations, that a lot of children watched and loved.“

If Sylwia could choose her dream client to work for, it would be Rolling Stone magazine.
