The members of Protoplanet Studio have been avid drawers since childhood and knew early on that they would work in the creative sector. They trained at various art and film universities (UdK Berlin, KH Weissensee Berlin, Filmuniversität Babelsberg) and discovered their passion for illustration and animation.

They love illustration for its ability to invent different worlds and realities, to clarify diverse subjects, and the fact that there are no limits to creativity. The transformation of a static illustration into an animated motion picture fascinates them every time.

Ideas can come from everywhere: from totally ordinary everyday situations that we don’t pay much attention to, or from nature, which is a great elixir for desktop working. Even emotions can be the starting point for an image or a sketch. Any subject, any object can be fascinating and exciting. The studio often encounter animal creatures, metamorphoses of figures and situations in their work, but also the interaction of human figures.

The Protoplanet team works mainly digitally and they specialise in drawn animation and 2D animation. The most important studio tools are the Wacom Cintiq graphic tablet as well as pencil, brush and ballpoint pen. Animation and design finals are created digitally, first idea drafts and sketches are created by analog means. They prefer clear and minimal shapes, little winks and a sense of humour and appeal as well as fluid movements and an eye for details. The studio specialises in the creation of explanatory and promotional films and motion design.

First concepts and image ideas are discussed between the trio and everybody brings their ideas to the table. On that basis they quickly create storyboards and character sketches which are gradually worked out into backgrounds, scenic situations and figure models. The most intense parts are the animation and the subsequent final artwork. There are different degrees of development which are defined according to the project, the customer requests and effort. The final stage is the compositing, the assembling of the final film from the various elements as well as the rendering, before they hand the project over to their sound and music production colleagues.

Protoplanet Studio create loveable and humorous characters with a mind of their own who appeal to all age groups. Their short films work for a young audience as well as for adults – this is their great strength.

Created in 2021, the animated film META is a good example of the wide range of their abilities. The production was challenging: starting with the first vague idea, moving on to character design and storyboards into animation, they collected and discarded many ideas, had many discussions and tried different routes until they arrived at the harmonious result: “It is fascinating for us to see how the first tiny idea starts to grow organically, how image and movement find each other. How language, sound and music add their own, sometimes unforeseeable layer and how in the end everything comes together, much more than the sum of its parts.” The studio put a lot of work and passion into this project and they tried many new things that expanded their working methods.

Protoplanet keep trying new things and educating themselves further - with new styles, programs and animation methods, in workshops and conferences. They like working for clients with sustainable and meaningful contents and objectives.
