Before making a name for himself as an urban sketcher, Lapin studied at the private art school in France and worked as a graphic designer in Paris und Barcelona for five years.
As a kid Lapin dreamt of becoming a pilot who flies around the world and discovers fantastic dinosaurs – and draws them! And in a way the Frenchman’s dream has come true: Armed with his sketchbook, he travels around the world and captures his impressions in drawings. Whether in Japan or New York, on the street or in the Metro, sitting on the floor for hours or just a few seconds – for Lapin, sketching is life.
Lapin preferably draws into vintage sketchbooks that he finds at flea markets. He fills the pages with his analogue illustrations made with ballpoint pens, watercolours and colour pencils and documents his daily life, the places he went and the people he met. – “I keep every page exactly as I sketched it. Not one gets ripped out or edited later.“ – However, he does scan his drawings to arrange them in digital collages on the computer.
New French airline Joon commissioned Lapin to design a 4-volume collection of travel books. For this he visited the European cities Berlin, Barcelona, Lisbon and Paris and spent a week each capturing the special atmosphere of these metropolises. The resulting limited editions reflect the character of every city and the airline gifted them to their customers.
For the past 15 years, Lapin has filled more than 180 books with his unique sketches. Meanwhile he also enjoys teaching and gives regular workshops at universities and art schools to impart his special drawing style to students.
According to Lapin, there are three things no good sketchbook should go without: A dinosaur, an oldtimer and a rocket ship!
