Fabio Consoli’s love for art and painting brought him to illustration. He is fascinated by it and to him, it is the perfect compromise between art and design.

Fabio studied at the University of Arts in London and the School of Arts in New York before he returned to Italy, where he now lives and works. He teaches at Abadir Fine Arts Academy, gives workshops and is a tutor at the virtual Sketchbook Skool.

Fabio gets his inspiration from contemporary traditional painting, creative graphic design and contemporary illustration – all of these art forms inform his own style. Technically, his style is a mixture of graphic art and painting; stylistically, he sees himself as a conceptual illustrator. Fabio creates his commissioned work exclusively digitally. In doing so, he works the same way as he would when painting analogue on canvas or paper – this gives his images a special, warm emotionality. Sometimes even he can’t comprehend, whether an old artwork was created analogue or digitally! Fabio’s most important analogue tool is acrylic paint: „Leave me on a desert island with a brush and four acrylic paints, and I can stay there forever!”

At the start of his process comes the research. He then writes down keywords which he sketches out in a rough draft as miniatures on paper. These then get transferred into digital layers.

For every illustration Fabio Consoli spends half of the time choosing the right colour palette – in his experience colour is the first thing the viewer takes notice of. Subsequently he works out the shapes and composition of the image. Everything combined results in the message that the image should convey.

When the viewer wants to put his illustration for an advertising campaign on their wall, Fabio is satisfied with his work!

Fabio has a list of dream clients and projects: He would love to do a Google doodle, but his heart beats especially for social and environmental companies like WWF or Greenpeace. And most of all Fabio wants to paint big murals!
