Astrid Schulz

Astrid Schulz aka astiknasti completed her Communication Design studies with a focus on illustration in Munich. Afterwards she spent ten years in Hamburg, working as an art director and illustrator. Under the moniker #knasti_tattoo she also creates stick-and-poke tattoos.

Illustration has always been present in Astrid’s life: As a child she usually thought in pictures and created her own picture books, and in bad phases of her youth illustration helped her to make sense of things. For Astrid Schulz, illustrations have to be smart and connect different contents. Illustration says a lot about the illustrator, and Astrid loves to observe people how they really are. She gets her inspiration in various ways: She likes to attend creative lectures, but also overheard sentences, exchanges with other people and situation comedy (or tragedy) contain inspiring moments. – „I pick out little things from passing moments, to show their painful beauty.“

For Astrid Schulz the path from idea to finished illustration starts with an analogue sketch, which she carries out with a 0,5 mechanical pencil or fineliner. She tries to avoid different versions – „Because personality is most apparent in the first draft, in characters as well as objects.“ – This is why the analogue sketch is indispensable for Astrid. It then gets scanned in and digitally refined.

Astrid’s illustrations are naively drawn but made for grown-up heads. She works with fine lines that have a very strong, direct and sharp-tongued effect. Whether hidden object scene or minimalist drawing, every detail contributes to the story.

For her latest project Astrid Schulz travelled along the French Atlantic coast for two months with her partner and food photographer Jan Herbolsheimer, to create an outdoor cookbook together – all illustrations, graphic design and ceramics are made by Astrid’s talented hands.
