Andre Levy a.k.a. Zhion is a multicultural and multidisciplinary creative. As an illustrator, Zhion makes use of universal icons to create approachable visuals, putting significance in the core of his process and adapting his style to each project’s needs – but not at the cost of his signature playfulness! This versatility and conceptual approach are the result of years of experience as senior art director for advertising agencies in Sao Paulo (where he was born and graduated as Graphic Designer) and Frankfurt – where he lives since 2011.
Zhion’s personal background and social engagement make diversity one of the ever-present themes in his work. This led Viacom Brasil to invite him to illustrate and conceive the type-animations for a series of social media and TV-clips for MTV in Brazil and Latin America explaining the acronym LGBTQIA+. “If I can have a positive impact on society and still creatively do what I love, that’s what I call a dream project”.
Besides designing custom lettering for his motives, another aspect makes his illustrations even more recognizable: In his work, the typically print-aesthetics influenced by comics and pop art meet the looping animations of the social media Era. This special mix is what brought him to illustrate a magazine cover with augmented reality interaction for Ogilvy Germany and another with a digital animated version for Union Investment.
Pattern designs are also a constant element in Zhion’s visuals and allowed him to expand his creations beyond the communication industry, as in the collaboration with Brazilian textile designer Paola Muller. For this project he created patterns inspired by Brazilian fauna and flora for a home décor collection including blankets and pottery. “Being able to see my work applied in different materials and areas is something that always pushes me creatively.”
That’s also the reason why in his personal work Zhion gladly experiments with non-digital techniques such as painting, sculpting, screen printing and risograph. In his most recognized project to this day - Tales You Lose – he transformed coins into pop portraits by painting real and fictional characters like Batman, The Little Mermaid and Lady Gaga over the faces of queens and kings. The project opened doors for group exhibitions, was featured in publications like Zeit Magazin and even created opportunities for advertising campaigns and a fashion editorial in Vogue Gioiello Italia.
